How do I request a free reusable face mask

Council is providing free reusable face masks to vulnerable members of the community. Find out if you or your family members are eligible and submit your request.

Do I have to wear a face-covering?

Yes, from 11.59pm on 22 July, people 12 years and older in Melbourne and Mitchell Shire are required to wear a face covering outside of their house. Find out more about face coverings on the DHHS website.

When will wearing a face-covering become mandatory?

From 11.59pm on Wednesday 22 July in both Melbourne and Mitchell Shire.

Where can I buy a face mask?

You can buy single use face masks at pharmacies and other outlets. Many online stores are selling cloth masks or you could make your own. View the DHHS guidelines for making your own mask.

Can I make my own mask if I can’t find one to buy in the shops?

Masks don’t have to be medical grade and can be any kind of face covering. You can use scarves, bandanas, homemade masks or face shields. You can make your own mask using old clothes or fabric. 

What happens if I don’t wear a face mask?

You will receive a $200 fine for not wearing a face mask outside of your house in Melbourne or Mitchell Shire. Please wear a mask to protect yourself, your family and our community.

Are there any exemptions to wearing a mask?

Yes, there are medical exemptions available if required. 

Childcare workers are not required to wear a mask when working and teachers conducting a class are also not required to wear a mask when teaching. Both these professions must wear a face mask to and from work while outside of their home. 

You don’t need to wear a mask while doing strenuous physical exercise, but must have one on you for use before and after your exercise.

What is the best way to take off a face mask?

Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water or use alcohol-based hand sanitiser containing at least 60% alcohol. Don’t touch the front of the mask or your face.

Carefully remove your mask by grasping the ear loops or untying the ties. If your mask has filters, remove them and throw them away. Fold the mask and put it directly into the laundry or into a disposable or washable bag for laundering. Single use surgical masks should be disposed of responsibly. Wash your
